THE NURSERY CURRICULUM PREPARES CHILDREN TO MOVE ON TO ALL AREAS OF THE NATIONAL CURRICULUM WHEN THEY REACH SCHOOL AGE.
MATHEMATICS - Children match, sort and measure in the course of their activities, becoming familiar with concepts of size, weight, quantity and sequences and learning with adult help to use the vocabulary of mathematics.
COMMUNICATION, LANGUAGE AND LITERACY - In the company of responsive adults, children learn to listen and communicate by means of language and to understand from experience that words and pictures carry meaning.
PERSONAL AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT - Children develop independence and confidence as they play alone and in small and large groups with appropriate adult support. They learn to co-operate, take turns and share as a part of a large group.
CREATIVITY - Access to a wide range of materials, allows children to begin to represent their feelings and experiences. Stories, movement and music provide opportunities to explore and express feelings.
PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT - Carefully chosen equipment gives children opportunity to develop physical skill and special awareness and also the skill to use small tools such as pens, brushes, scissors etc with increasing control.
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE WORLD - Experiments with a range of substances enable children to begin to identify the properties of materials and to classify, describe and predict. The children are encouraged to discuss their discoveries and to ask questions about the world around them.
